Hurricanes announce first ever squad

Hurricanes Rugby League are pleased to announce the squad to face the USARL side Washington DC Slayers on May 5th in Kingston, Jamaica.

This will be the very first time the Hurricanes play a fixture since their formation in February 2011 and it is wonderfully satisfying to see the number of current and former Jamaican internationals, coupled with recent graduates of the Hurricanes Academy program.

Fabion Turner, who was the inaugural captain of the Hurricanes Academy in 2011 has been selected on the wing, whilst current Academy member Ryan Hall will start in the second row alongside powerhouse and current Jamaican international Tyronie Rowe.

In the backs, there is speed and power aplenty, with the likes of Renaldo Wade, Everton Richards and Ryan Grant all set to unleash their dazzling abilities to what is expected to be a huge local crowd. Not only will the game be the first for the Hurricanes, it also represents the very first time that a side from the USA has travelled to Jamaica to play a game of rugby league.

The venue for this historic clash is still being finalised, but it will be a central Kingston venue.

Commenting on the announcement of the squad is Hurricanes General Manager Roy Calvert:

“This is team represents over 12 months of planning and training and we are exceptionally pleased with the team that has been selected. Each individual has worked hard and committed themselves to the Hurricanes movement and we are focused on a great performance come May 5th. The side also shows the growing nature of the sport, with players originally hailing from the JRLA community clubs and the ever growing Inter-Collegiate rugby league competitions. Testament to that is the inclusion of players from all 4 colleges in UWI, UTECH, Mico and GC Foster. I am also personally excited to see the inclusion of the young players that have performed so well in the Hurricanes Academy program over the past 12 months and it shows that we are building a pathway for these young men”.

Coupled with the announcement of the squad, comes the news that the Hurricanes are very close to securing a naming rights partner for the event, of which news on that is bound to attract major attention of people throughout Jamaica towards the Hurricanes and rugby league in general.
