On Saturday, the University of the West Indies defeated GC Foster 36-24 in Game one of the best of three finals. GC Foster took the lead after only five minutes when winger Winston Morgan crashed over in the right hand corner for the first try of the day. Roxberg Buckle put the St. Catherine team further ahead when he got their second try four minutes later.
UWI responded when Alrick Brown and Douglas Evelyn made good individual breaks in the 19th and 25thminute respectively. The game was halted for 10 minutes when UWI’s big prop forward Ato Carrington suffered a serious leg injury after going into a tackle. The injury seemed to galvanize his teammates who were determined to finish the job for their fallen brother. Kamau Brown went over just before half time to give the boys from Mona a 12-8 lead.
The second half was an even more intense affair with both team trading scores. However, the pace and power of UWI proved the decisive factor as scores from Andrew Phillips, Everton Forbes (2), and Ajani Duncan saw them home, Chad Simeon slotted home 4 conversions. For GC Foster, Jermaine Davis, Aldaine Lumsden and Morgan scored second tries for the losers with Omar Davis and Dane Reid slotting over a conversion each.
Game two will be on Saturday March 26 at the UWI bowl where the home team can wrap up the championship. Kick off will be at 1 pm.
