Hurricanes Rugby League (HRL) is to run as an independent rugby league franchise but run in harmony with the objectives of the Jamaica Rugby League.
The objective of the HRL is to promote, develop and foster the sport of rugby league through the establishment and ongoing running of a rugby league side that will compete in one of the Unitied States of America semi professional rugby league competitions. The ideals of the HRL are to allow talented Jamaican and Caribbean athletes with the opportunity to train and compete in an elite level rugby league competition that will also allow them to further their experience within the game of rugby league and to enhance their chances of representing the Jamaican national rugby league team.
The aim is to create pathways for players from all backgrounds to aspire to play for the Hurricanes franchise.
As part of the long term vision for the HRL, it is imperative that we have in place systems to allow for professional development to both our playing and administrative staff.
Player development will initially focus on identifying talented young players aged between 16-19 to form an Academy Squad, which will then receive specialised training and programs from HRL. Constant monitoring will be applied to selected players to ensure that they are not only participating as required in the HRL program but are also attending and behaving to a level deemed above standard in school. We wish to attract and develop players that are not only good at rugby league but also people of good character as well.
Future programs will be put in place at 14-16 ages and open age/senior level and will be monitored through the Football division of the HRL organisation. The monitoring of these development programs will be done so through what will be referred to as either a High Performance Unit or Academy.
Along with these specialised squads, HRL will also have a charter and commitment to present gala days to the general public so that they can experience some of the drills and skills that our franchise players do. This will develop community spirit and a feel good vibe towards the Hurricanes brand and will also enable the Hurricanes players and staff to intermingle with the general public.
